  20. The nortel phone system was developed by northern telecommunications. It's a 
  21. system that uses a main computer, an administrative phone, and regular phones 
  22. as nodes. It's a very useful system, and is increasing in popularity in 
  23. businesses and schools.

  27. The network consists of a computer for advanced features, an administrative 
  28. phone which is like a sysop phone, a pbx which handles the extensions, zones 
  29. which handle groups of nodes, and phones for nodes.

  46. main computer - this handles the advanced features. It is normally a PC box running
  47. a nortel operating system. The nortel system is essentially a run off DOS. It uses
  48. ascii and ansi, and navigating through it is similar to using cgi forms in lynx.
  49. It's an efficient system, with no added shit to slow it down.

  51. administrative phone - this is where all the calls are filtered through. If the
  52. network has an admin phone, the administrator is capable of disabling features
  53. remotely. When a page comes through, it can be stopped by the administrator, only
  54. through the admin phone.

  56. pbx - it's a fucking pbx. public branch exchange. This is essentially the entire
  57. physical phone network.

  59. zone - this handles a group of nodes. it's for addressing groups of phones. A zone
  60. can be assigned privaledges. A zone can be disabled through the admin phone.

  62. node - this is a phone on the network.

  66. On the nortel network, zones are connected directly to the PBX through the phone
  67. box. There is normally a single outside line, and then a block of about 10 ring
  68. and tip terminals, and then red and black. The nortel switch is connected to the
  69. network. The bell switch, or the phone box is connected to the network, and to the
  70. outside line. This allows the network to call out, and the outside line to call in.

  84. Each node is a nortel model phone. It has a few things that a normal phone might
  85. not. There is an LCD screen, Built in CallerID, Speeddial, Features, and Speakerphone.

  87. The LCD screen is for prompts and CallerID and messages. It displays the Time and Date,
  88. and can even scroll a MOTD. The CallerID message says the extension, the zone, and the
  89. phone number.

  91. The Features button allows the user access to a broad range of programmable features.
  92. It can even access the background music and play it over the speaker.

  96. the nortel system is full of features that can be used to do tasks on and off 
  97. the phone. There's a feature that even allows for paging. I scanned a few at 
  98. my school, and I found some good results.
